Google Showing Licensable Badge In Image Search Results

    Google image license batch

Google is now showing a "Licensable" badge in image search results. This update to Google images make it easier to license photographs or pictures that are covered by copyright.

This change is helpful for photographers, publishers and artists to get in front of their audience and also helps users to find images that they have a right to use. This new update is an effort to help photographers get paid for their images.

When you specify license information for the images on your website, the image can display with a Licensable badge on image thumbnails in Google Images. This tells people that license information is available for the image, and provides a link to the license in the Image Viewer, which offers more detail on how someone can use the image.

    How to Find Licensable Images

If you are searching for licensable images in search results, Google is making it easier to find them.

Google said, “You can also filter results to only return those images that include licensing information.” Users can select “Creative Commons licenses” or “Commercial & other licenses” from the Usage Rights dropdown menu in Image search.

    Image Licensing Structured Data Markup

In order for images to display licensing information in search results, the site where the image is published must be using image license structured data. Site owners can add the required markup either with structured data or IPTC photo metadata.

Metadata should be added to each licensable image on a site. Site owners can verify the markup has been implemented correctly using Google Search Console as well as the Rich Results tool.

This new update to manage your sites with licensable images can help to reduce accidental image theft and it can also increase revenues for your images. Google may also add a link directly to how searcher can buy and get the images.
