YouTube Rolls Out Picture-in-Picture Mode For iOS Users Globally

Picture-in-picture (PiP) mode on YouTube has been missing on iOS for long time. Users are now able to try out the feature.

The picture-in-picture feature allows users to use a small window to keep a video playing while using the rest of the screen for other work. Apple users will now be able to watch YouTube videos in a mini player while using other apps.

Only YouTube Premium subscribers will have access to the picture-in-picture feature in the experiment. Earlier this year, Google announced support for Picture-in-Picture (PiP) for YouTube users on iOS. Now, Youtube started rolling out Picture-in-Picture feature for all iOS users globally including India.

Users of iOS can only test out the new experimental picture-in-picture (PiP) feature until October 31.Those who subscribe to YouTube Premium can use YouTube PiP mode right now on their iOS devices.

How to use YouTube PiP Mode in iOS

  • Open a browser of your choice and head over to youtube.com/new. Make sure you are a YouTube Premium subscriber and have signed in to your Google account.
  • Now, find the “Picture-in-picture on iOS” section and click the blue “Try it out” button. The feature will be activated in your YouTube app on iOS.
  • Next, head over to your iPhone, open the YouTube app and start watching a video.
  • Then, press the home button or swipe up from the bottom to go to the home screen and enable YouTube PiP on your device. You will see that the YouTube video will continue to play in a mini-player on your iPhone’s home screen.
  • PiP window can now be resized to fit any screen corner and even be sent to any corner of the screen.

The Picture-in-Picture mode has been available on YouTube for quite some time on Android. In 2018, Android users in the US running Android Oreo or higher, who do not have a paid subscription, were also offered an ad-supported version of PiP playback. The Safari browser was also used by iOS users to access PiP playback on YouTube.
