Wikipedia, the crowd-sourced encyclopedia  is a free-access, free-content Internet encyclopedia, currently 115,603 active editors and 27,242,450 registered editors. Its founded by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, was launched on January 15, 2001. 

According to Alexa, Wikipedia, whose first words were, "Hello, world!", is the seventh-most visited website in the world. Notably, ‘George W Bush’ is the most edited article on the non-profit website with 45,862 edits and ‘India’ features at 15th position with 22,271 edits. Wikipedia is 7th Current Alexa rank among the ten most popular website worldwide.

According to ITpro,
Wikipedia has received a cash injection of around $1 million as part of a bigger drive to raise $100 million by 2026.

"We have a great fundraising model right now, but things on the internet change so it's not something we can count on forever," Lisa Gruwell, chief advancement officer for the Wikimedia Foundation said. "Wikipedia is a pretty rare thing, and the endowment is there to ensure this cultural treasure will never go away."

"We are a fraction of the size of the others," Gruwell said. "If you compare how many people we have compared to someone like Amazon, we look pretty lean.”
